NVQs and Apprenticeships

Working with Ventrus Multi-Academy Trust staff, we have come together to look at what was needed to develop CPD opportunities for Teaching Assistants and other non-teaching staff members, of which NVQ’s were an important part of this offer.

We have been working with GP Strategies, a National company, as a provider for these qualifications.

Training is done within the workplace with a tutor coming out to support the learner.

There are a full range of courses on offer such as:

  • Teaching Assistant Level 3
  • Early Years Educator Level 3
  • Business Administrator Level 3
  • Team Leader Level 3
  • Departmental Manager Level 5

We currently have various Trust Employees signed up to Apprenticeships within either their Teaching role or Admin.

What does 'NVQ' stand for?

NVQ stands for ‘National Vocational Qualifications’.

What qualifications do I need?

You need GCSE’s graded C or above in English and Maths or equivalent qualifications in these subjects, as well as a qualification in IT.

If you don’t have these you can undertake a functional skills test which will make sure you are able to proceed with the NVQ.

What is the commitment and how do they work?

The commitment is 10-12 months and you will be assigned a tutor that will come in every 3-4 weeks to observe you, conduct guided discussions and collect evidence.

You will also be given written assignments which usually equates to about 4 hours per month of written work dependent on which qualification you are doing.

What is an NVQ equivalent too?

  • Level 2 is equivalent to  GCSE A* to C
  • Level 3/4 is equivalent to A levels
  • Level 5 is equivalent to a Higher National Diploma

What is the age limit?

Courses are available to anyone of any age.
